About the Cairn Terrier
History of the Cairn
The Cairn Terrier originated in the Isle of Skye in Scotland and is thought to be one of the oldest of the terrier breeds. They were bred to hunt fox, badger, otter and any other vermin that was around. The Cairn is an active, game, hardy little dog, with a wiry top coat and a soft furry undercoat. This makes them well suited for this type of work and the terrain. They were originally referred to as the 'Prick Eared Skye'. In 1910, the Kennel Club (GRB) officially recognized them as the Cairn Terrier. Shortly after that, the Cairn made its appearance in North America and has gained popularity ever since.
Cairns are very people oriented and are perfectly happy with any home life, whether it be a family with children or a retired couple, living in a house or apartment. They have a typical terrier temperament, being inquisitive and independent. They are very intelligent and quite trainable with a little patience. They enjoy many activities such as walking, agility, fly ball, etc. They remain playful throughout their life.
